The recent and rapid impeachment of Paraguay's former President, Fernando Lugo caught leaders of leftist governments by surprise Friday night. The leaders of Argentina, Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador all announced they would not accept the new government of Paraguay, despite Lugo's announcement that he would accept and comply with the Paraguayan Congress decision to impeach him.
This would create some tension in the Mercoseur block and in other regional relations as leftist leaders in Latin America see their patchy ooalition under threat from growing discontent with their methods of rule and poor handling of economic troubles. President Kirchner has been famous for trying to distract attention away from her failed economic policies to focus on the issue of soverignty for the Falklands. Since she started raising the issue, the Argentine peso has declined in value dramatically and street demonstrations have sprouted up.
